The bike light nerds aren't going to like this review because of the distinct lack of beam shots and detailed photographs. But as I've already reviewed the previous versions which can be found here it seemed pointless covering old ground. Effectively this light shares many things in common with the previous model, in fact, it looks identical which isn't a bad thing. So why has Fenix made a 2017 edition, well think of it as a mk2 or a version 2.0. They've taken what was already a very good light and given it a little extra lemon drizzle.
The BC30R 2017 gets 200 extra lumens compared to the mk1 BC30R, Boosting the light to a now expected 1000Lumen output on high. This little boost seems to have had a knock-on effect, reducing runtimes compared to the previous edition and even compared to whats on the box. Fenix estimates a 2hr 40min runtime, some 40 more than in our runtime testing. Which had the light stepping down a mode after 1hour and 57 minutes. That being said the built-in runtime screen predicted its runtime very accurately and 2hours on high is what I would expect from a light of this type.
The main improvements can be seen on the remote switch and bar mount, both improving ease of use and operation. The bar mount is now a quick release clamshell style and the latch for removing the light from the clamp is easier to operate now that its spring loaded. The switch now has an extra button allowing the rider to remotely flash the light and switch modes conveniently, which is a great improvement on the mk1 as that only allowed you to flash the light.
All of these little improvements together help bring the BC30R bang up to date, a great, solid performer from Fenix.
